Coastal Preserve Expansion Project
With its undeveloped Lake Huron shoreline, rare and threatened plant species, and a unique coastal fen, Hess is overflowing with biodiversity and ecological significance.
For years, HeadWaters Land Conservancy has been working with local landowners and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to expand the preserve from its original 12 acres to more than 200 acres, ensuring the permanent protection of this critical landscape.
Thanks to the support of Consumers Foundation, the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, Walmart Alpena, and the Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, we successfully completed Phase One of this expansion in December, acquiring 40 adjacent acres from a private landowner. This was a huge step forward in safeguarding the wetlands, forests, and wildlife corridors surrounding Hess.
Now, we are moving forward with Phase Two—purchasing a lakeshore parcel that borders the preserve. This acquisition would add 1,500 feet of pristine Lake Huron shoreline and critical surrounding wetlands, further protecting fragile coastal habitats and improving water quality.
To help us reach this goal, The Carls Foundation has generously awarded HeadWaters a $200,000 challenge grant! This 1:1 matching grant means that every dollar donated will be doubled, bringing us closer to permanently preserving this irreplaceable stretch of Michigan’s coastline.
With your support, we can make this vision a reality. Stay tuned for ways to get involved, and if you’re ready to help protect Northeast Michigan’s wild places, your gift today will have twice the impact!
HeadWaters is seeking to acquire 200 acres of dune and swale, as well as coastal habitat bordering the Hess Nature Preserve in Presque Isle County.
The neighboring land to Hess would extend the undeveloped coastline another 1,500 feet. Protecting this area from development is priceless, as the natural landscape is important for water filtration and home to rare and threatened flora and fauna native to Michigan.
