Board Member - HeadWaters Land Conservancy
HeadWaters Land Conservancy (HWLC) is a committed non-profit organization working to protect and preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Northeast Michigan. Since 1994, our mission has been to safeguard the region’s forests, wetlands, farmlands, and waterways through dedicated land stewardship, conservation easements, and community engagement. We believe in the power of local conservation to create lasting impacts for future generations.
Position Overview: We are actively seeking motivated and skilled individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of our organization, guiding key decisions, and helping to advance our mission. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the conservation of Northeast Michigan’s natural resources while also developing your professional leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Participate in the development and oversight of HWLC’s strategic direction, ensuring alignment with our mission and long-term goals.
- Fundraising & Development: Support fundraising efforts by identifying potential donors, advocating for HWLC, and engaging in key events.
- Community Engagement: Serve as an ambassador for HWLC, building relationships with community members, businesses, and stakeholders to promote our mission and programs.
- Governance & Oversight: Provide guidance and oversight on financial matters, organizational policies, and overall governance to maintain transparency and accountability.
- Program Support: Offer your expertise to enhance HWLC’s land stewardship, conservation, and outreach programs.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Passion for Conservation: A strong commitment to environmental conservation and protecting Michigan’s natural landscapes.
- Relevant Expertise: We are particularly interested in individuals with skills in Marketing, Strategic Planning, and Legal (especially real estate law). Experience in these areas will help us address current gaps in our board’s collective skill set.
- Leadership Experience: Prior leadership experience in the non-profit, corporate, or public sector is highly valued but not required.
- Fundraising Ability: Experience in fundraising, donor relations, or community outreach is beneficial but not required.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to think critically and strategically to help guide the organization’s direction and growth.
- Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire others.
- Cultural Fit: We seek individuals who can integrate smoothly into our existing team and contribute positively to our organizational culture.
- Time Commitment: Willingness to dedicate time to attend bi-monthly board meetings, participate in committees, and engage in organizational activities.
- Term Commitment: A commitment to serving a three-year term, with the potential to serve additional terms if re-elected and mutually agreed upon.
