The Lake Avalon Nature Preserve, covering twenty acres of land, may not be considered vast, but its potential lies beyond its size. Situated northwest of the village of Hillman in Montmorency County, the preserve can be found just off county road 451, conveniently located opposite the Avalon Lake public boat launch. Despite its accessible location, the preserve hasn’t received much foot traffic over the years. This lack of visitors can be attributed to several factors, including the prevalence of poison ivy along the roadside and its limited visibility. Fortunately, this summer, efforts have been made to address these issues and enhance the preserve’s appeal. Thanks to the support of the First Federal of
Northern Michigan Legacy Foundation, the Avalon Nature Preserve has undergone a significant transformation. A new entrance sign now welcomes visitors, marking the starting point for a gravel parking area, ensuring a more accessible approach to the preserve. Additionally, to prevent unauthorized ORV use, the once imposing roadside gate has been relocated further back, effectively blocking access to the new trail
entrance.

The main trail inside the preserve offers a picturesque and enjoyable experience. It follows a curving figure-eight design, spanning just over half a mile in length. As you traverse the path, you’ll find yourself immersed in a diverse mixed hardwood forest. Among the trees, you’ll encounter
magnificent, towering red pines and oaks, providing a scenic backdrop throughout the eastern section of the preserve. For those seeking a special treat along the trail, a short spur trail leads to an extraordinary sight: a massive legacy red oak tree, boasting an impressive age of at least 150 years. This ancient tree stands proudly as a testament to the history and resilience of the area’s natural environment. Its size is so grand that it invites visitors to embrace its majestic presence with a hug, creating a unique and heartwarming experience for nature enthusiasts.
