Nestled on the shoreline of Presque Isle County, Michigan, lies the captivating and diverse Hess Nature Preserve – a hidden gem awaiting discovery. Sprawling across roughly 14 acres along the enchanting shores of Lake Huron, Hess Nature Preserve boasts a harmonious blend
of lush lowland and upland forests, including the rare wooded dune and swale ecosystem, found only in a handful of places across the state.
Recently, a significant milestone was achieved in preserving this remarkable natural wonder – the installation of the new boardwalk. This transformative addition to the preserve has paved the way for visitors to embark on an immersive journey through its awe-inspiring landscape without causing any disruption to the delicate ecosystem.
The newly established boardwalk trail begins its course on the shoulder of Evergreen Road, welcoming visitors to step into a realm where wilderness meets tranquility. As you tread along this meandering path, you’ll be greeted by the gentle rustle of leaves, the chorus of wildlife, and the harmonious symphony of nature at its finest. The boardwalk seamlessly transitions through the verdant lowland and upland forests, offering a diverse tapestry of landscapes to explore and appreciate. The wooded dune and swale, with its rarity and ecological significance,
stands as a testament to the preserve’s commitment to safeguarding Michigan’s natural heritage.
Such a remarkable feat would not have been possible without the boundless dedication and collective spirit of our volunteers and a single
conservation minded donor. Their unwavering commitment, invaluable time, and exceptional expertise brought the boardwalk’s blueprint
to life.
